Lessons

Whether you've studied for years, or are just beginning...I can help you sound your best. At Music/Arts Institute, I teach all areas of percussion:

  • snare drum
  • keyboard percussion
  • drum set
  • multiple percussion
  • timpani
  • ethnic percussion
  • electronic music

drumsetMy studio incorporates the latest teaching techniques and stresses the development of creativity, problem solving, and goal setting. Lessons are one-on-one and involve study of etudes and musical compositions, technique exercises, memorization skills, and more. In addition to private study, all students are encouraged to participate in the CrossPulse Ethnic Drum ensemble, which focuses on the musical traditions of West Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean. We emphasize improvisation skills and group participation and welcome all to join. Experience is NOT necessary.

Lesson Policies at Music/Arts

You will find all of this information at the Music/Arts Institute website, but here is a condensed version for your convenience.

Enrollment

Music/Arts operates on an academic year – September-July.  With ongoing registration, you may enroll at any point in the year and your contract will be prorated based on the number of lessons left in my year.  To begin the process, you will need to schedule an enrollment interview through the Music/Arts office (816) 836-1998.

Recitals and Festivals

Music/Arts offers two festivals in the spring:  Pre-Contest Festival is for high school students preparing for All-District Music Contest, and Festival MAI is for all enrolled students.  Each festival is adjudicated and written comments and a rating are provided by the judge.  In addition, the Percussion Studio holds two studio recitals per year (see MAI calendar or calendar on this site).

Building Closure

Because Music/Arts services students from many school districts, it is impossible to coordinate closures for inclement weather with each district.  If I cancel lessons, notices will be posted on this site and the Music/Arts Institute website.
