Helping You Sound Your Best!

Random Thoughts

The month of October 2013 was horrific for me! Between my son's soccer and robotics, my duo Algo de Novo with guitarist John Svoboda, and the other commitments of life, I found myself looking for ways to ease the insanity.

Unfortunately, there's no easy solution, but what keeps me sane and interested in the important things is the ability to find release in unusual ways.

Practice time is the first thing to go. With young kids in the house, it's hard to practice drums at 11:30pm, so I have to find ways to stay mentally connected to music without having to hit something. With youtube and pandora, there are untapped worlds of musical creativity waiting to be explored. And don't ever think that "listening" to music is not productive! Many of my best ideas have grown from new and unusual things I've listened to and incorporated into my playing.

Try going beyond the musical realm and explore something new that fits into your busy schedule. Have you ever wanted to learn to knit? how about that book you've always meant to read? That few minutes before bed, or while riding the bus or in the car is an ideal time to read something new, something that may excite you as you hadn't dreamed possible. Just because time is short, doesn't mean that there isn't time at all. Maybe you don't have time for your music, but do have enough time to try something else. All of this helps keep balance and perspective in life. It is crazy, it is tiring, but it's also a whole lot of fun it you make it so!
